Bone Tomahawk
In a small town where peace is maintained by Sheriff Hunt (Kurt Russell), violence has arrived with scavenger Purvis (David Arquette), who stumbles into view, unsettling locals like Brooder (Matthew Fox). Unsure what kind of mischief Purvis was up to during his travels, Hunt proceeds with caution, but trouble soon reaches the community when Samantha (Lili Simmons), the local doctor, is abducted by a tribe of cave dwellers, or natives who've remained in a primeval existence, free from outside influence. When Hunt elects to pursue the kidnappers into enemy territory, he assembles a posse that includes Brooder and Chicory (Richard Jenkins), a local coward. Also angling to join the rescue mission is Samantha's husband, Arthur (Patrick Wilson), whos nursing a horrible leg injury, but he's not about to let the merciless strangers steal his wife without a fight. Bringing the western back to its roots, Zahler concocts a chatty tone with Bone Tomahawk, zeroing in on the interplay among leathery men and their daily business of survival. Theres no main character here, only a community atmosphere overseen by Hunt, who maintains the law in town, checking out unwanted visitors and calming tempers. Hes a man of routine, with a skittish side when it comes to dealing with the violent extremes of his job, always working to assert his dominance with a clear, logical mind. However, when brutal murders begin to spread across the land, Hunt is left with limited leads, with Samanthas kidnapping and Purviss presence suggesting a grim road ahead for the sheriff, confronted with an unknown adversary that resides in a land where outsiders are marked for death.
