An intense study of the clash between medical ideals and methods in postwar psychiatric care. A young man is committed to a psychiatric ward and must fight for his dignity, sanity and freedom under the power of the cold Dr. Varmont. Keeping him going are his new-found girlfriend and the promise of care from the humane Dr. Emery - but are these enough to save him? Compassionate yet unflinching, this film set the scene for later classics such as 'Shock Corridor' and 'One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest'.
