John Garfield plays Nick, a down-on-his-luck small-timer, desperate for a fresh start. A botched robbery forces Nick into hiding, where he meets the charming Peggy (Shelley Winters) but as romance blossoms his desperate situation threatens them both. Garfield's magnificently edgy performance as the flawed anti-hero was his last - he died shortly after the film was completed, after being blacklisted by the McCarthy Communist witch hunt.
