The film opens in a Dickensian orphanage in Russia, a fascinating miniature world presided over by a hierarchy of orphans. The daily routine is broken when 'Madam' arrives to introduce a loving Italian couple hoping to adopt a child. Vanya is the six-year-old boy who is about to be adopted, but this is a crucial moment in his life, and there are choices to be made. Will Vanya be content to simply spend his days basking in the warmth of the Mediterranean sun, or would the desire to know his true mother slowly eat away at him for the rest of his life?
