Since the failure of his small business, Victor has become a household tyrant who constantly complains and criticises his long suffering family until Victor's old nanny takes drastic action. When asked to describe his work, Danish director Carl Theodor Dreyer said that film should present "truth filtered through an artist's mind, truth liberated from unnecessary detail." This silent film is a carefully observed comedy of manners, tackling issues of domestic inequality which are still relevant today.
