Shanghai Surprise
Perhaps the only real surprise is that anyone let Madonna near a film set again after this muddled romantic adventure sank like a rock. Playing like a ham-fisted cross between 'The Big Sleep' and 'Romancing the Stone', this film gained curio status because of its famous headlining couple. Sean Penn is a fortune hunter who needs to get out of China, and Madonna is a missionary nurse (yep), out to find the curative powers of opium. A match made in heaven.
