Oliver Stone's unusually apolitical memorial to 9/11 is the true story of two New York policemen (Nic Cage and Michael Pena) sent in to find survivors and then caught in the collapse of the towers. Both families of the actual men were involved in the writing process and Stone attempts to bring as much reality to their story as possible. Tactful and moving, this is unashamedly patriotic - an American story about the survival of the 'American spirit' - but still the impact of the events is inescapably touching and tragic. Co-stars Maria Bello and Maggie Gyllenhaal as the wives waiting anxiously at home.
