They Filmed the War in Colour: France is Free!
France under German occupation, civilian life during this greatly troubled period, army exercises in North Africa and Great Britain to prepare for the liberation, the streets and cafes where soldiers, GI's and citizens celebrate their victory, celebrities like Clark Gable and Ernest Hemingway, the horrors of war and the bodies discovered at Dachau, these are the overwhelming images that make up the rich tapestry in this historic documentary. Enriched with memories from some of the last remaining witnesses of the liberation, these fragments uncovered from the 1940s finally give us the chance to view the war as millions of people had to live it: in colour.
